” Show Boat “

Wombwell Amateur Operatic Society have made a happy choice in the “Show Boat,” which they are giving as their annual production in the Empire Theatre, Wombwell, this week. Few musical Plays can he more colourful and more tuneful. Edna Ferber’s story provides a rich background for Oscar Hammerstein’s book hand Jerome Kern’s “Ol Man River”, “Make-Believe.” “You are Love” and “Can’t Help Loving dat Man” are their own testimony.

On Monday, the Wombwell Presentation had great promise.

Jack Guest

The musical play has one great advantage over the straight play. It provides the actor with a wider canvas. Often the more successful player of the legitimate theatre misses this fuller opportunity on the musical comedy stage Not so Jack Guest. I have never seen this accomplished Wombwell player give a more expansive performance than he did on Monday in the rollicking part of Captain Andy. His Southern accent was impeccable and his simulation of age was obtained with distinction

This was Jack Guest’s night.

Young “Star”

The evening provided at least one “find”: youthful Dorothy Hunter. This girl has charm, vitality and personality. Until the final scene of the show she played her part in the chorus, but for the final, and the brief passage immediately preceding it she was translated tothe pleasant role of “Kim.”

In this she brought a breath of freshness to her playing.  Her dancing had warmth and there was an eagerness about her contribution that was entrancing.
