Wombwell Alarm.
Huge Piece of Rock Falls Into Market Place.
There was an alarming happening at Wombwell Saturday night, when a land slide took place in the market place.
The market place is in a sort of quarry, bounded three sides by walls of rock 50 feet high. On the top of the quarry is a wall enclosing a block of property.
Just after the market had closed on Saturday night, a huge piece of rock, weighing some 60 tons, came hurtling down into the market place, smashing a number of stalls into splinters. The noise of the falling rock was heard about half-a-mile away, and many people feared that there had been explosion. Had the fall occurred two hours previously, when the market was full of people, many of them might have been buried
