The Real Wombwell,

Wombwell 5, Boston 2

Wombwell gave their supporters a pleasant  surprise on. Saturday when they defeated Boston. It was not the best display all are given this season by any means but the performance was praiseworthy, considering that some difficulty had been experienced in raising a team.

Ten minutes from the start only 10 players had been chosen and when the teams turnout Pennington, a full back, appeared at outside right.

But it is characteristic of Wombwell that they often rise to the occasion when the prospect seems most unlikely.

Last Saturday’s win represented a triumph over misfortune, for two of their best players. Brunt and Murray were still on the injured list.

Lining -up for the start the players stood insilence for a few moments as a tribute to l the memory of Roy Kilner. The crowd also did homage. most of them baring their heads. On the stand a flag was flying at half mast.

The Wombwell halves showed bad tactics in failing to keep the ball down. Hopkinson, a young inside right secured by Wombwell from Dunston on Tyne showed some delightful touches and gave the Boston defence a lot of trouble. Boston went ahead after 15 minutes. Menlove tried a shot. The ball cannoned off a defender and went over for a corner. The flag kick was well placed by W. Jenkinson and MENLOVE put it straight into the net.

Eventually SANDERSON equalised with a fine drop shot from a flag luck but S. JENKINSON put Boston ahead again. But for a timely clearance by Chambers Wombwell would have equalised in the first ten seconds of the second half.

Boston seemed to take Wombwell likely. They realise the mistake of this later on.

PENNINGTON equalised for Wombwell. After this Boston suffered a very bad lapse. The signal of their downfall was sounded when DURANT gave Wombwell a goal.

Goodacre put the ball back to him rather smartly and the goalkeeper stuck together it but there was a gasp of surprise when he allowed the ball to roll through his legs into the net and HOPKINSON gave them a fourth goal.

Seven minutes later FISHER put on fifth. In each case Durant seem to tumble badly.

The Boston fullbacks were to blame for not affording Durant more protection. During the first are Stevens saved a penalty shot taken my S Jenkinson – a stinging shot
