First for Three Months
Wombwell 3, Rotherham 1
Wombwell were “making whoopee” on Monday. By defeating Rotherham 3 – 1 they doubled their points. Their previous victory was over Mansfield at Wombwell on September 10th. The players seemed to shake themselves from the inferiority complex that has hampered them for weeks. They were the better team throughout.
The players walked on to the field in dense fog and for ten minutethe spectator were “listening in.” The game was stopped until the air cleared and it was possible to make another start.
The first half saw Wombwell shaping better than on any previous orrasion. The halfbacks were a useful trio and the forwards could do anything but get goals.
A pleasing feature was the first time kicking of the wing men. Corner kicks galore fell to Wombwell but were all cleared. A chance to go ahead came to Wombwell in the form of a penalty but Ashmore sent the ball tamely into the hands of Burke.
This failure however, was negatived in the second half when Bob Jones, a former Wombwell player. failed with a spot kick for Rotherham. Ward making a brilliant save. Twenty minutes had elapsed when J. W. CLEGG, one of the backs, scored with a fine shot from up the field.
The second half again found Wombwell on top. The forwards were tenacious, the Rotherham backs being hurried constantly. Lovatt and Weatherall got through a tremendous lot of work without making slips and Burke, in goal, pulled the visitors through many emergencies. Anderson and Breedon’s did clever work on the Rotherham wings and Cocker lead the attack skilfully. SYKES put Rotherham level, but further goals were added for Wombwell by ASHMORE and J. CLEGG.
Sound half-back work was the biggest factor in Wombwell’s victory. Crossland gave an improved display and both J. W. Clegg and Dobson tackled and set their forwards going with judgment.
