Wombwell Save a Point

Late Goal Foils Notts. County

Wombwell  3  Notts County Reserves  3

Although it may not be in Wombwell’s power to command success they certainly deserve it. Yesterday they put up a plucky fight against Notts. County Reserves and were able to save a point, drawing 3-3. They were unlucky not to win in that they were denied a penalty when Grice the County centre-half, knocked down the ball with his hand in the penalty area.

Wombwell scored in the first minute and snatched a brand from the burning by scoring in the last minute when they were losing 3-2. The County side included several fist teamers.

Wombwell were among the first away. Receiving a pass from Ashmore, Waring promptly centred and R. Jones placed the ball past Brookes. Wombwell made two more likely attacks on their left wing and it was as much as the County defence could do to smother them. Briggs making desperate efforts to get a shot in. On another occasion Briggs got right through with Simpson at his heels but shot wide when he had only Brookes to beat. The game was contested at a hot pace and the manner in which the Wombwell backs played under pressure was not reassuring. Hall drove a shot clean at Ward and a moment later equalised. The County’s speed threatened to overwhelm Wombwell but effective half-back play held the visitors out, Wright, Sykes and Murden kicking with a wonderful accuracy. A clever run by Ashmore ended in Wombwell going ahead again. Briggs tried in vain to rush his shot in but, was able to gather himself from the ground and hook the ball into the net at the second attempt. A lapse on the part of the Wombwell defence allowed the County to equalise. Malloy being the scorer. Maw put the County ahead.

In the early part of the second half Wombwell did most of the attacking. Waring putting across some splendid centres though his shooting was not so good or Wombwell might have had a couple of goals at this period. The County backs were very hard to beat. Struggling to equalise Wombwell were unfortunate to have their penalty appeal ignored but just before the end Ashmore equalised. The County were obviously a better trained side, but Wombwell’s bustle was the dominating feature. The ball was swung about vigorously and Waring and Ashmore made ground rapidly on the wings. Briggs was very persistent, but Wombwell’s strength lay chiefly in the half-back line, Sykes being a great schemer.
