It might have been November 5th at Hough Lane on Saturday, there were so many fireworks knocking about. In many ways the match was the most memorable seen on the ground to many a season. It was marked by surprising keenness and movement so fast that the referee had the greatest difficulty to keep in touch. As for the linesmen—well, they must have been run to death. Excitement piled on excitement, and there were stirring doings round the two goals.
Once in the first half Wombwell were awarded a go a d the players were walking back to the middle when there was a mild appeal from the Notts. Forest players, and the referee consulted a linesman. There was general amazement when the referee changed his ruling. On another occasion, in second half, the Wombwell goal was having a gruelling time and Albert Smith was surrounded by players. Be run out and one of the Wombwell players, on the ground, as the ball came in fished it out-with his hands. That a penalty kick should have been granted was obvious to everyone save, apparently, the referee. That made things fifty-a fifty, go to speak, and he would have been a superman to have seen everything that occurred in this remarkable tussle.
The game opened al a serious pace with Notts. Forest pressing. Their forwards moved with great speed and swung the ball about with precision
The Wombwell defence had not to stand on ceremony. During a trying period Sanderson gave of his best and got Wombwell out of many difficulties.
