Ten minutes before the match with Lincoln ended, at Hough Lane on Saturday Wombwell reporters were anxiously looking at their watches. That was an indication of the way the game went. Wombwell led at the time – but would they be able to hold on to the end? Lincoln were hammering away like fury but they gained nothing by it.
That was partly due to their own forwards, but chiefly the grand work of Albert Smith. Grand work indeed. Lincoln found him unbeatable either on the ground orin the air
The result flattered Wombwell but their pluck and determination brought the reward.
Lincoln are a meaty lot, particularly in defence, and they used their weight. The game was marked by frequent fouls but no player had to leave the field. Mr. Gilling kept a tight hand on the play and though he seemed a stickler for detail his rulings were sound and impartial.
