Mansfield Held
Wombwell Improvement Continued
Wombwell 1 Mansfield Town 1
Wombwell gave another sound display against Mansfield at Hough Lane on Saturday, and the hope raised by their good work against Mexborough a week earlier was strengthened.
Wombwell seem to be recovering some of the form they showed at the opening of the season. They have had to meet in their first series of engagements some of the strongest teams in the competition, and Saturday’s match was another hard trial. The play was not of a high order but Wombwell kept a grip on the game and finished stronger than their opponents.
At the end Mansfield had their backs to the wall. A happy indication of the revived face of the football enthusiasts of Wombwell was reflected by the attendance. There were nearly 2,500 present; and they were much more articulate than usual. Wombwell supporters are and undemonstrative crowd as a rule but on Saturday they found their voices. The effect on the Wombwell play was striking. The Wombwell crowd might try the experience again.
For the first time this season Wombwell fielded the same team in consecutive games. The game was roughly divided into two phases: Mansfield had the poll in the first half and, broadly speaking, Wombwell were on top in the second. Over the whole 90 minutes Wombwell were slightly the better side, and would not have been overpaid by both points.
