Gainsboro’ Provide Wombwell with Third Successive Win
The third successive win within eight days by Wombwell was obtained at the expense of Gainsborough Trinity, who were the visitors at Hough Lane, Wombwell, yesterday.
The game on the whole was fairly evenly contested, but the home side appeared to have a slight advantage all the way through. The feature on both sides was the remarkably good defensive work. Wombwell had a couple of capable full-backs in Howson and Drew, while Gainsborough were particularly well served by Harris. Though entirely experimental, the Wombwell half-back line worked splendidly, Dawber and Rounds being in exceptionally good trim. It was mainly on that account that neither tide had scored at the interval.
Good forward work was seen on both sides in the second half. About half-way through Harris brought Woods down inside the penalty area, and from the kick Howson scored for one home side.
There was an excellent “gate” for a mid-week fixture, the crowd numbering about 1,200.
