Woman in Canal at Wombwell

Yesterday morning Mary Jane Appleby (59), wife of Aaron Appleby, Carter of 25 Park Street Wombwell, was rescued from the canal at Wombwell by Joseph Pearce of Hawson Street.

Pearce whose house is near to the canal, saw the woman in the water, ran to the edge and by means of a clothes prop pulled her out.

Artificial respiration was used, and the woman came round.

Sudden Death After Attempted Suicide

Mary Jane Appleby, age 59 years, wife of Aaron Appleby, Carter of 25 Park Street Wombwell, died suddenly at home yesterday morning.

Deceased a week ago attempted to commit suicide by drowning herself in the canal.

She was taken before the magistrates on Wednesday last, when she was discharged on the promise not to attempt such a thing again.

Deceased has been depressed for some time, and suffered from dizziness, but refused to see a doctor.
