Wedding – Morris & Wilson – Local Sports Interest

A Wedding or much interest in local sports circle was solemnised at the Parish Church, Wombwell, yesterday.

The contract important were Miss Ivy Morris, only child of Mr and Mrs John William Morris, formerly of Wombwell Main and now residing at Spondon, near Derby, and Mr Tom Wilson, also of Spondon and fourth son of Mr and the late Mr John Wilson, of Hawson St, Wombwell.

The bride’s father was formerly chief electrician at the Wombwell ,Main Colliery, while the bridegroom was employed by the same firm as his assistant.

Eighteen months ago Mr. Morris took up a position as electrical engineer for the British Celanese Company at Spondon and shortly afterwards the bridegroom rejoined him as this assistant.

The bridegroom is well known in football and cricket circles in South Yorkshire. He started his football career with Wombwell Wesleyans and after playing with Darfield for a time he had a run with Wombwell in Midland League football.

He was a member of the Darfield team in the memorable season when they won the Sheffield Challenge l Cup and other trophies.

As a cricketer he graduated with Wombwell Wesleyans, as a  member of which team he won the bowling  average of the Wombwell and District Sunday School Cricket League for two seasons. He then joined Wombwell Main and afterwards played for Mexborough.

On moving into into the Derby district he joined the Spondon Cricket Club and in his very first season had the distinction of winning HM ship medal of the Derby and District League.

After the wedding yesterday a large party was entertained at the reception at the Saint George’s Arms, Hotel, Wombwell Main.
