Wedding – James & Evans
At Wombwell Parish Church yesterday, Miss Alfreda James, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John James, of the Horse Shoe Hotel, Wombwell, was married to Mr. John Evans, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Evans, 18, Frederick Street, Wombwell.
The ceremony was conducted by the rector of Wombwell, the Rev. J. St. Leger Blakeney, and Mrs. J. Harrington was at the organ.
Wearing white lace with embroidered veil and coronet of orange blossom and carrying a sheaf of lilies, the bride was given away by her father. She was attended by Miss Lois James (sister), Misses Muriel and Edna James (cousins), and Miss Hilda Dearden. They wore pink lace and georgette with hats and shoes to match and carried bouquets of pink carnations. Miss Maureen Callaghan and Beryl Hanks were maids of honour and wore primrose dresses, and wreaths of silver leaves and carried posies of primroses.
The best man was Mr. Kenneth Adams, of Doncaster, and the groomsmen Messrs. William James, Gordon Tilbrook and Charles Hanks.
After the ceremony a reception was held at the Horse Shoe Hotel, at which 150 guests were present. The couple left for Brighton where they are spending their honeymoon. The bridegroom is serving in the West Riding constabulary at Honley. He was formerly in the Coldstream Guards. The numerous presents included a canteen of cutlery from the Horse Shoe Hotel Outing Club.
