Wombwell had its first “kilt” wedding of the present war on Mon when Pte. Jack Clifton, of the Seaforth Highlanders, son of Mr. and Mrs. David Clifton, of “Cliftonvile,” Cemetery Road, Jump, was married at Wombwell Parish Church to Miss Constance Annie Carby, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Craven Carby. of 7. Goodyear Crescent, Wombwell. The Rector. Canon J. St. Leger Blakeney, conducted the service.
The bridegroom, who joined up in June of last year, was formerly employed in the butchering department of the Barnsley Co-operative Society at Barnsley. and in the Army is following his trade. The wearing of the kilt on ceremonial occasions in war-time is a privilege reserved to regimental staff.
Also in a kilt of McKenzie tartan was an Army colleague of the bridegroom , L./Corpl. Oswald Iggo, of Siseflield, who acted as usher.
