Trammers Buried
Fatal Sudden Fall of Roof at Cortonwood

A sad mining mishap took place at the Cortonwood Colliery yesterday morning, when John Sopps (17), trammer, of Sherwood House, Park Street, Wombwell and another trammer called Percy Harvey, were buried by sudden fall of roof.

8 tons of debris covered them.

The work of rescue was undertaken promptly by workers in the pit, but when the youths were extracyted it was found that Sopps was dead and Harvey was in a very critical condition. The last name was conveyed to the Barnsley Beckett hospital.

At the time of the fall the trammers were engaged in moving four tubs which had been standing overnight.
