Whitworth Cup back to Wombwell after 47 years
History of 47 years was bridged at Wombwell Main when the cricket club brought back from Hoyland the “Whitworth” Cup.
They had won it by defeating Worsborough Bridge in a test match, the climax to a desperate effort to keep their grip on the championship ladder. A month ago they were faced with the necessity of having to win all their remaining matches; they never put a toot wrong.
So once again this coveted trophy comes to Wombwell. It is interesting to note that Wombwell Main won the trophy when it was first put up in 1900. They won it again in 1903. but for 44 years they have never had a look at it. And since it may be 44 years before they see it again they were keeping it busy “in choirs and places where they sing” last week-end.
Of the 47 clubs mentioned on the cup, some are now nothing more than a pleasant memory. These make an interesting index to local cricket over the past half-century.
