The Church Beautiful
Memorial Screen Dedicated At Wombwell
Gift of Captain A.E. Allott

A very notable and beautiful addition to the interior ornamentation of Wombwell Parish Church was revealed to public view for the first time last evening when, at a special service arranged for the purpose, the Bishop of Sheffield dedicated a newly installed oak chancel screen.

The screen is a gift of captain A.E.Allott, J.P., a vice president of the Barnsley British Cooperative Society, for many years a member of the Wombwell Urban Council and a leading churchmen.

It has been erected to the memory of Mr Allott’s wife, the late Mrs Minnie Jane Allott, who besides being a devoted church worker, had the love and admiration of the community for her work and generosity on behalf of various religious denominations and all deserving charities.

Mrs Allott, who died in March 2, 1936, came to Wombwell from the Leeds district at the age of 13 to live with the uncle, the late Mr Charles Marsh, who was a wool merchant with premises in the High Street. She touched life in Wombwell at many points and with a shy diffidence which won all hearts, she worked untiringly for the men on active service during the Great War.

She was also a devoted supporter of the Wombwell football club during the years that Mr Allott was chairman and secretary. As long as memory lasts she will be cherished in Wombwell.

Mr Allott, who is also chairman of the parochial church council, has made many generous gifts to the Parish Church in recent years. In connection with this latest gift he has also provided a new chancel carpet some 40 yards long and 5 feet wide in Madonna blue to match the other chancel appointments.

Pattern of Screen

The screen is off the Fishlake pattern, being based on the design of the ancient chancel screen in the Church of Fishlake, near Doncaster. A characteristic feature is a double crested carved tracery surrounding the canopy cornice.
