Fred Ledger, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Ledger, of 79, Blythe Street, Wombwell, gained a series of notable successes on the new dirt-track at Lundwood, Barnsley, on Saturday
Riding a Douglas machine, Ledger finished first in the two principal events, the 500 c. c. and, the unlimited class. Also he set up a new record for the track by covering the mile (four laps), in 1 minute 54 2-5th seconds.
Ledger is 21, and has ridden motor – cycles for seven years. It was not until Whitsuntide that he took up dirt track racing but he has already proved himself accomplished at the new sport.
At his first effort he won a gold medal as a member of the Darfield team that won the open relay race on the greyhound track at Wombwell on Whit-Monday. His father was one of the first in Wombwell to own a motor-cycle and was a keen motorcyclist for years.
