Rival Gangs in Scuffle at Wombwell

A scuffle in the street at Wombwell between rival gangs of youths was described at Barnsley on Wednesday, when Henry Moorhouse, Ben Harvey, Wombwell, and. Herbert Redfearn, West Melton, were summoned for obstructing the street by fighting. Moorhouse wrote asking for the case to be dealt with in his absence. The others pleaded guilty.

Sgt. Dale said that at 10-30 on the night of Saturday, 7th June, the defendants started fighting on the footboard of a tramcar near Wombwell Town Hall. Later they got down into the road, fighting continually. The thoroughfare was absolutely obstructed for ten to fifteen minutes.

A huge crowd gathered and it was impossible to move them until he had taken defendants to the police station.

“These are members of rival gangs,” said witness. “One gang comes from Wath and the other from Wombwell. Every time they meet there is a row.” He had previously warned them.

Defendants were fined 5s. each.
