The Second Nowell

Another case of father and son serving in the Army together is that of Pte. William Nowell (54), of Queen Street, New Scarborough, and Pte. William Frederick (Brian) Nowell, 6, Hoyland Street, Wombwell.

Mr. William Nowell served throughout the last war in the York and Lancaster Regiment and has now enlisted in a Home Defence Unit.

Pte W. F. Nowell joined the Coldstream Guards in 1930 and three years later was transferred to the Army Reserve. In the meantime he saw service in Egypt. He was called up at the outbreak of the present war.

Pte Nowell is married and has two children and therefore his soldier father is a grandfather. Both father and son worked at Darfield Main Colliery.
