Nearly—But Not Quite

Irving Ward (21), son of Mrs. Martha Ward, of 33, Marsh Street, Wombwell, had not been in the Army long when he had an exciting “nearly but not quite ” experience.

As a gunner, Ward was drafted to France, but before his party could land colleagues were coming back the other way. They saw the coast of France, but did not get off the boats.

He was formerly employed at Elsecar Main Colliery and was a well known figure at Wombwell Baths.
