Killed On His Birthday

Wombwell Soldier’s Fate

Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Thompson, of 15, Broomhead Road, Wombwell, had received a letter from their son, Pte. Dennis Thompson (25), acknowledging cards greeting him on his birthday on July 20th.  Later they received from the Records Office notification that he was killed in action in Normandy on that date.

In his last letter Private Thompson said they were now getting good food, including plenty of fresh butter and he had got a milk supply by milking a goat.

Pte. Thompson was married in 1940 to Miss Hilda Wake, of 28, Dearne Road, Brampton.  Before coming to Wombwell his parents lived in Darley Terrace, Summer Lane, Barnsley.

He went to Park Street Schools, Wombwell, and, before joining up in February 1940, was employed by a painter and decorator.

His only brother, Cyril Thompson, (27) was aboard the merchant ship ‘Orama’ when she was lost at Narvik and has since been prisoner of war in Germany.
