Soldier – Taylor J. – Killed in Action

August 1918

Mexborough and Swinton Times August 24, 1918

Private J. Taylor

Private J. Taylor, 87, Hamilton Street, Mitchell’s Main, was killed in action on 18 July.

His wife has received a sympathetic letter from the deceased’s  officer, who says a shell burst in the trench where he was working, killing him and another soldier instantaneously.

The officer also pays a warm tribute to the deceased soldier by saying, “A better soldier and worker I have never met. He was one whom I could ill afford to lose.”
