Killed By Enemy Action
Wombwell Family’s News of Soldier Son
Sergeant Albert Edward Scargill, son of Mr. and Mrs. Will Henry Scargill, of 74, Barnsley Road. Wombwell, has been killed by enemy action” while serving in the Royal Engineers in the British Isles.
The news was received at Wombwell last week-end, and on Monday members of the family attended the funeral at Slough, where Sergt. Scargill’s wife lives. There are no children.
Sgt. Scargill joined the Royal Engineers in 1933, having previously worked as a haulage hand at Cortonwood Colliery where his sixteen years’ old brother was killed in an explosion in 1932.
Fot five years he served in China and for one year at Malta. On the outbreak of war he rejoined as a reservist and very shortly afterwards was drafted to France. He returned to England before the capitulation. In the Army he has won medals for swimming, boxing and rowing.
He was married in March of last year.
