Soldier – Robinson, Alan – Killed in Action

July 1917

Mexborough and Swinton Times July 21, 1917

Private Cooper Alan Robinson
Machine Gun Corps

58, Junction St, Wombwell was killed in action on May 4.

His mother has received the following letter from Lt F Bradbury:

“It is with deep regret that I have to announce to you the loss of your son, who at the time of his death was employed as my servant. My loss, of course, is trivial to yours, but I feel his absence keenly.

He was always cheerful and attentive, and I could not have wished for a better man.

His end was painless; indeed, he died in his sleep, a shell hitting the trench about 2 yards in front and blowing the parapet in on top of him.

On removing the earth we found he had wounds in the chest and arms, but from his peaceful appearance I’m positive that death was instantaneous, and was probably due to concussion.”
