Sergeant Lieutenant R L Macridge

Second Lieutenant R.L. Macridge (West Yorkshires) son of Mr and Mrs T Macridge, Charnwood, Wombwell was killed in action in France on April 26.

He was educated at Ilkley grammar school, and in May 1916, enlisted in the Cameron Highlanders. Later he saw some severe fighting on the Somme, and in 1917 went to the battle of Arras.

He returned to England last August to qualify for a commission, and was gazetted in February.

His father has received the following letter from Lieutenant Colonel D.L. Weir:

“The battalion was moving up in the morning of the 26th under shell fire to occupy a position just in the rear of the forward line. It was during this advance of your son was killed almost instantaneously by a shell

I need hardly tell you how much we all feel the loss of so gallant a young officer, whose military career has been so suddenly brought to an end.

I and my brother officers desire to tender our very deepest sympathy in your irreparable loss.”
