Sgt William Lowther, Military Medallist

4 Cemetery Rd, Wombwell, has been admitted into hospital in Edinburgh, with a wound in the leg, received in France on April 14.

On two occasions, in July and December, 1915, Sgt Lowther held some trenches for 48 hours, his Sgt having been killed. For this gallant act he was awarded the military medal and promoted from Lance Corporal to Sergeant.

Shortly after he was gassed and subsequently invalided to England, where he stayed until December 22, 1916, when he was again sent to France. Lowther, after another four months active service, has again been wounded.

On one occasion, when he was convalescent, Sgt Lowther, with the help of some fellow Tommies formed a group of minstrels, and raised a large amount of money in aid of Red Cross funds.
