” Fighting” Family
The youngest of five brothers who are serving, or have served, in the Forces, is L./Corporal E. Kitchen (better known the Lundhill district as ” Major”) son of Mr. Major Hitchen, of Park Street, Wombwell, who has had eighteen years Army service and is now, at the age of 78, in the Home Guard.
Before joining up, L.Cpl. E. Hitchen worked for a Sheffield firm of builders. The other four sons served in the last war as follows:
Corporal G. W. Hitchen, 5th Y. and L. Regiment.
Able Seaman E. M. Hitchen, served in H.M.S. Anson and paid supreme sacrifice in 1916,
A.I. Hitchen, R.V.C.,
W.C. Hitchen. R.D.C.
The father, Mr. Major Hitchen, served seven years in the R.G.A., ten years in the 5th Y. and L. Regiment and one year in the Defence Corps at an aerodrome. He is now on a headquarters staff of the Home Guard.
In 1916. Mr. Major Hitchen had the distinction of being included in a Guard of Honour to King Georve V and Queen Mary.
