Soldier – Hinchcliff – Killed in Action

Private Thomas Hinchcliff
York and Lancaster

Mrs Thomas Hinchcliff„ 27, Alma road, Wombwell, has been notified that her husband, Private Thomas Hinchcliff (York and Lancaster) was killed in action in France on Sept 18. He enlisted in Sept., 1914, and loud seen much service in Egypt and France. He was gassed in Sept., 1917.     He returned to France on Easter Sunday and has since been in some very hot Battles.

Private Hinchcliff’s officer writing to his wife says:—

“It was exceeding bad luck. He had actually reached the point where the advance had to stop. There was a heavy mist that morning, and whilst looking round he was shot through the head by a hidden enemy. He was one of the best men in the company and everybody who knew him is upset.”

Prior to enlistment he worked at the Dearne Valley Colliery.

He was 24 pars of age. A photo will be given next week.
