Wombwell Soldier Killed
Leaves Widow and Baby Son
A Wombwell man whose father died of wounds received in the last war has been killed in action in the Middle East.
He is Trooper Arthur Haywood (21), son of Mrs. Saxby, 9. Wombwell Main, and the late Pte. William Haywood, of the Y. and L. Regiment. The official message gives the date of his death as April 28th.
Trooper Haywood joined the Army three years ago, leaving the Wombwell Main Colliery where he had been employed since leaving John Street Council School, Wombwell.
He married a girl he met while serving at Alderhalt, near Fordingbridge, Hants.. and their first baby was born a week ago.
Trooper Haywood’s brother Noah (33), is serving in the Y. and L. Regiment; his younger brother, Alfred (19), has passed for the Navy. Trooper Haywood’s father was wounded at the Dardanelles.
