enlisted in November 1914 and at Christmas 1915, went to Egypt.

Shortly after this he was sent to France, receiving wounds on the Somme last year.

Having recovered, Private Hayes was again sent into the trenches, and has again been wounded. He returned to Pontefract on Monday from 10 days leave at his home in John Street.
