Presumed Killed
Wombwell Soldier’s Fate Mrs. Griffiths, of 19, Broomhead Road, Park Street, Wombwell, has received from the War Office, intimation that her husband, Pte. Edwin Griffith, who was 4 last heard of in June of last year, must now be presumed killed.
He had been serving in France and was home on leave in May, 1940. The last letter from him was received by his wife the following month. In the meantime he was reported missing.
A bus driver for the Yorkshire Traction Co. and an Army reservist, Griffiths was drafted to France shortly after the outbreak of war and had served as driver-batman for three officers. Before the war he was a chauffeur in private service and had spent three years in Germany.
Although much distressed by the news, Mrs. Griffiths says she will not give up hope.
