Soldier – Foster, Thomas – Refused To Surrender

June 1918

Mexborough and Swinton Times June 15, 1918

Refused To Surrender.

Cpl. Thomas Foster
Leicester Regt.

Corporal Foster of Wombwell, who as recently announced, has been awarded the D.C.M., in a letter home describes the incident in which he gained it.

He states that early in the morning of March 28, a portion of his company were holding a trench. An enemy force came up the road leading to the trench. A German officer called on Foster to surrender, and he refused to do so.

His comrades were captured, but Foster, after shooting two Germans fought his way backĀ  and conveyed useful information to headquarters.

Cpl. Foster has been serving since early in 1916. His brother, Dvr. George Foster (R.F.A.), has been serving since September, 1916, and has been in France fifteen months.
