Wombwell Scout’s Death

Formerly Assistant Scoutmaster of the 25th Barnsley (Wombwell) Troop, Signaller Jack Fawcett (21), R.C.S. son of Mr. and Mrs. Horace Fawcett, of 22, Wood Walk, Wombwell, has been killed in a traffic accident while on active service in India.

The news reached his parents on Monday, two days after they received a letter and photograph from him.  He stated in the letter that he had made arrangements to study in India for a B.Sc. degree in Chemistry. Signaller Fawcett was an old boy of Wombwell Modern School and Barnsley Grammar School and worked as an apprentice metallurgical chemist up to July 1942, and was drafted to India in June 1943.

He started scouting as a cub at Elsecar and joined the Wombwell group 9 years ago.
