Seeing Life
Wombwell Man of Many Campaigns
Pte. Samuel Dyson (23), younger son of Mr. and Mrs. William Dyson, of 3, Gower Street, Wombwell, has seen a lot of the world since he joined the Army on October 16th, 1939.
He was in the withdrawal from Dunkirk, got safely out of Crete after fighting in Greece, did a spot of hot campaigning in Syria and finally found himself in action against Germans and Italians in Lybia.
In the 4 meantime he had been sent to South Africa to recuperate and only recently has had a spell in hospital with wounds. He is now back with his battalion again.
Pte. Dyson sends his mother a letter in which he states that a pal named Hutchison, whose home is at 20,Market Square, Goldthorpe, was in the same hospital with a gunshot wound in his ankle. The pal is now recovered and back at “work ” again.
Pte. Dyson tells his mother he spent last Christmas in hospital and had a very good time. Every man in the hospital received from Lady Lampson a wallet and a bag containing soap, chocolates, sweets, a handkerchief and a Christmas card. The people of South Africa gave every man choice of a wallet. cigarette case or fountain pen. He chose a fountain pen.
