Home from Africa
One of the first to return from the North African battle front to Wombwell is Corporal R. D. Dyson (31), of Gordale, Edward Road, Hollowgate, West Melton.
He had an operation in hospital at Algiers and has been invalidated home by a hospital ship. Still under treatment at St Helen’s Hospital, Barnsley, he was able to attend the British Legion parade at Brampton on Saturday when he was introduced to Lord Harewood. Previously employed by the Barnsley Co-operative Society at their Cortonwood branch, and afterwards in the warehouse at Barnsley, he joined up in June, 1940, and was drafted to North Africa with the First Army last November. He saw hard service in the Battle of Tebessa. Corporal Dyson is a son of Mr. Rabbi Dyson, who served as a Sergeant-Major in the York and Lancasters in the last war.
He married Miss Margaret Mabel Davy, daughter of Mrs. Elsey, of Knoll Beck Lane, Brampton, and of sniper William Davy who fell in France in 1916. His homecoming was a birthday surprise for his little daughter, Gloria, who was four 3 days later. His return also coincided with his wedding anniversary. Corporal Dyson was for 18 years a member of the choir of Wombwell Parish Church, and a member of Wombwell Operatic Society. He has served as a gym instructor in the Army.
