“Fares Please” In France

A familiar and popular figure has been lost to the Upton-Sheffield bus route by the departure for military service of Mr. Robert Charles Dawes (36), of 67, Roebuck Street, Wombwell, son of Mrs. Dawes of 11, Hope Street, Shipcroft, Wombwell and the late Mr. Robert Dawes.

After fourteen years at the wheel of a Yorkshire Traction Co. bus, Mr. Dawes has gone to carry “fares” in khaki in France. As a member of the Supplementary Reserve he crossed the channel within a fortnight of the declaration of war. Mr. Dawes was one of the first to drive buses about the Dearne Valley.      For years before he joined the service of the Yorkshire Traction Co., he was a driver for a private firm at Wombwell.

A wife and child await his homecoming.

Mr. Dawes belongs to a family with military tradition. His uncle, Mr. Ted Dawes, is one of Wombwell’s Boer War veterans, and in the Great War he had three uncles and a brother serving.
