“Six Feet Three” Of Wombwell
In Yesterday’s Trooping Ceremony

Watching on television yesterday (Thursday) the Trooping the Colour ceremony in celebration of the official birthday of Her Majesty the Queen, Mr. and Mrs. J. V. Adamson of 119, Main Street, Wombwell, were proud to see their only son, Harold Vernon Adamson (19) playing an important role. Harold, who is in the Coldstream Guards, had the distinction of being chosen as escort at the presentation of the Queen’s colour.

The Queen’s colour of the 1st Battalion Scots Guards was trooped, with a Sovereign’s escort of the Household Cavalry.

Guardsman Adamson, who stands six feet three and a half inches and weighs twelve and a half stones, has been in the Coldstream Guards for 12 months. He has already been recommended for promotion, but first is to take a course of Instruction. He signed on for three years “or any part of 22 years.” He is making good progress as a soldier and it is possible he will make the Army his career.

He has had many commendations on his appearance.

Guardsman Adamson has served only in this country, but he is hoping he may be posted abroad later.

Members of the Royal Family are no strangers to Guardsman Adamson. While on guard duty he has regularly seen the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Queen Mother and Princess Margaret. He has done guard duty at Buckingham Palace, St. James’ Palace, and the Tower of London.

An old boy of Wombwell County secondary School, Guardsman Adamson worked first as a bricklayer for a Wombwell building firm, and before joining the Army was a bricklayer at Cortonwood Colliery.
