Players Collapsed
Weather conditions were the worst so far experience this season, and it was not really surprising that several fixtures suffered interference.
Three league games were abandoned owing to players being in a state of fatigue, many of them collapsing due to the strain of trying to combat the elements.
At Wombwell, the conditions were described as the worst ever experienced in the district and the players of both teams – Wombwell Athletic and Sheffield United – were in a bad state when the referee applied the closure.
The players were so distressed that they had to be assisted from the ground and undressed by the club officials.
The game had run 73 minutes and United were winning 3 – 1
