Seven Couples Married
Two Celebrate Golden Weddings this Christmas
Romantic Link with Old Wombwell

On Christmas Day of 1888, seven couples were married “in a row” at Wombwell Parish Church by the Rector, the Rev. A. E. Flaxman. Next Sunday (Christmas Day) two of those couples will celebrate their Golden Wedding in houses within a few doors of each other.

The happy couples are William and Emily Pape, of 27 Orchard Street, Wombwell, and Francis and Mary Elizabeth Myers, of 83. Summer Lane, Wombwell.

Two other bridegrooms of that bright frosty morning are living to offer them greetings. They are Mr. George Burgin, of Hough Lane, Wombwell, and Mr. William Wilkinson, of Bond Street, Wombwell. in the case of these two, brother and sister were marrying brother and sister.

The old couples recall that there was a nip in the air and a sprinkling of snow on the ground to give the event — quite a memorable one for Wombwell in those days — a Christmassy atmosphere.
