Wombwell Man in “Glorious”
Now Presumed Lost
Having received intimation that their son, A.B. Leading Torpedo Operator Thomas Ivill (30). now be presumed lost. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Ivill, 193, Hough Lane, Wombwell, are grateful to all friends who have sympathised with them in their anxiety, and have helped in any way in efforts to trace their missing son. Mrs. Ivill has followed up every trace of hope and has written scores of letters without result.
A.B. Thomas Ivill was serving in the “Glorious” off Narvik, and as survivors were mentioned she has always held to the possibility of his being taken a prisoner through Norway. Even now she says she does not intend to give up hope. “Everybody has been so very kind to us,” she said, “and we have not known how to express ourselves at the time. Now ‘we feel we would like to thank them all.”
Thomas Ivill has been serving in the Royal Navy for eight years and at the outbreak of the war had completed the term for which he had engaged. He had seen a good deal of foreign service.
His brother, Leading Stoker Wilfred Iviil (25), has just completed his first leave in two years. Altogether he has seen service in four campaigns in seven years, and for practically the whole of the present war has been in “hot spots” in the Middle East, West Africa and the Mediterranean.
He told a “Times” reporter. “I would give anything to have news of my brother and shall be glad to receive, through my mother’s address, any details old shipmates can give me about him.”
Both the Ivill brothers attended King’s Road Council Schools, Wombwell, and both played football for Wombwell Main. “Tommy” worked at Wombwell Main Colliery before joining the Navy.
A third brother, Dennis Ivill (22), recently ,had both legs fractured in an accident at work.
