Sailor – Coe, John George – In Unbeaten Team

June 1944

South Yorkshire Times, June 17th, 1944

Leading Naval Airman, John George Coe (35), Fleet Air Arm, whose home is at 2, South Place, Wombwell, has revived a football interest in the services.

As a schoolboy at John Street, Wombwell, he won two medals with one of the best soccer teams the Wombwell schools have ever turned out.  Leaving school, he dropped football, but has recently played goal for a Naval team which has not yet lost a match.

Formerly employed at the Wombwell Gas Works, he joined up at Easter last year and has qualified as a mechanic.  He has just written home to say that he has been awarded an instructor’s badge, gained in record time.

He is a son of Mr. and Mrs. H. Coe, of 244, Summer Lane, Wombwell, formerly of Woodside Crescent Hemingfield, and married a daughter of Mr. and Mrs J. Tranter of Jump.
