Happy In the Navy

George Henry Candlin, formerly of Providence Street, Low Valley, joined the Navy five years ago on his 18th birthday. He has been out in China for two years and has travelled thousands of miles on the water.

When on leave last Christmas he married Miss Milthorpe, of Wombwell, one of the attendants to the Wombwell Hospital Queen. He has had some exciting times during recent months, having spent some time at Scapa Flow.

The food in the Navy is good, he says, and they are supplied with good warm clothes, but they still appreciate warm comforts. He never wishes to go back again to colliery work, and feels he can take up an entirely different career after his experiences in the Navy.
