Roy Tate and his “Spice Birds”

January 1937

Mexborough and Swinton Times, January 1, 1937

This is Roy Tate, of Wright Crescent, Wombwell, with his two “Spice Birds.”

He has won several prizes with them in bird shows, and they are of such a rare variety that he has had to invent the name “Spice Birds” for them himself.

Two months ago, Roy visited a travelling circus, when he saw these two birds in a cage, and he persuaded his father to buy them. They are like tiny Thrushes, with brown backs, and speckled breasts.

When he entered his birds in the Wombwell Cage Bird show recently, Roy won prizes in the foreign birds class with them.

I should be ever so proud of them, wouldn’t you?
