Wombwell Case Dismissed

A quarrel over the switching off of a wireless set was said to have started a fight as a result of which George Mangham and Edward Hall, of Wombwell, appeared before the Barnsley West Riding magistrates on Friday answer a summons for assault.

The case was dismissed, after defendants had pleaded not guilty.

The complainant, Herbert Caddick of Wombwell, said he and Ernest Mangham went to visit Mangham’s parents on Christmas Day. The wireless was on and someone asked that it should be turned off. Ernest Mangham turned it off and then someone struck him on the chin.

Then someone seized witness and one held him while someone else struck him in the eye.

Mrs. George Mangham said the young men were both drunk and it was she who asked Ernest Mangham if he would switch of the wireless. After he had done so he had words with his father and they started to struggle.

Caddick then struck at Hall but missed and a blow struck her husband. Hall held complainant’s hands to his side, but never struck him. They fell down knocking the table over.

Mrs Hall gave corroborative evidence in the case was dismissed
