Rotherham’s Revenge
Rotherham United Reserves 6 Wombwell 0
Rotherham United Reserves gained ample revenge for their defeat at the hands of Wombwell on Boxing Day in the return holiday encounter at Millmoor on Tuesday. Wombwell, who finished with eight men, were defeated 6 – 0.
The visitors were rarely dangerous and gave a disappointing display. Their forwards were completely subdued by Freeman and W. Weatherall. Crossland, who damaged a cartilage, did not leave the field until 15 minutes from the end when Rotherham had already scored five goals. Shortly afterwards Smith, the centre-half, was carried off and was closely followed by J. Clegg. who left the field limping
The Wombwell defence was hard pressed throughout and played gallantly under pressure. L. Jones made a fine impression and Briggs also covered up well. Wombwell were badly served at half-back, and Brayshaw was the only forward to show any initiative. Turner made several fine saves in goal and could only he blamed for one of the goals.
Rotherham thus scored their first win since October 1st. and incidentally their biggest, of the season. Rowbotham was outstanding in an exceptionally young forward line which over-ran the Wombwell defence at periods. ROWBOTHAM obtained four goals (one from a penalty) and JOHNSON got the other two. Rotherham might easily have reached double figures if the front tine had made better use of their opportunities. Sykes gay a sound display at centre-half.
