Pit Tragedy.

Sudden Death of Wombwell Miner.

The death occurred in Darfield Main Colliery yesterday of Thomas Jackson (56), dataller, of 6, Hall Street, Wombwell.

Jackson had returned to work after being off seven weeks with a head injury sustained in the mine, and had worked only two shifts. He left home at 5-30 a.m., apparently in good health, and less than two hours later the family were acquainted of the tragedy.

A brother, Frederick Jackson; said deceased ate a good breakfast before going to work, and was apparently healthy and quite cheerful. An inquest is to be held.

Jackson, who was a widower, served for three years in the Great War as a sapper in the Royal Engineers, and was a prominent member of the British Legion at Wombwell.

His brother, Mr. Isaac Jackson, 16, Elliott’s Avenue, Wombwell, who was fetched from work at Mitchell Main to be acquainted of the tragedy, celebrated his birthday yesterday.
