Successful Flying Season At Wombwell
Prize Distribution

A successful season was brought to a happy termination at a gathering held at the Royal Oak Hotel, Wombwell on Saturday night under the auspices of the Wombwell Flying Club.

There has been a big development in the pigeon fancy in the Wombwell district in the past few years, and the society has continued to make good progress. Mr B Smith (picture) in his presidential address, reviewed the past season and referred in terms of appreciation to the enthusiasm the members have shown.

In spite of the bad weather they had had an excellent season, and he confidently hoped that next year they would have another increase in membership.

Mr S Charlesworth (secretary) presented a balance sheet showing, among the items of income £64 2s in entry fees from members, competing in flights, and a donation of £5 10s from  Mr JG Taylor.

A sum of £9 9s 3d was paid to the railway company in respect of the carrying of birds, leaving a balance of £52 12s 10d to be shared as prize-money among the members.

During the season the society sent birds to Leicester, Banbury, Rugby, Didcot, Basingstoke and Gosport. The best averages were:

Old Birds: 1 B. Smith (average 1111 yards); 2. I Smith; 3. J Jones; 4. C Clough.

Young birds: 1 J Fallon (average 1150 yards) 2. A Rhodes; 3. M. Riley; 4. S. Downs

Gold medals, given by the society, were presented by Mr C Burden to Messrs B. Smith and J Fallon.
