Physical Fitness Without Tears.
Physical fitness without tears. That term can be appropriately applied to a series of expeditions which will go from Wombwell and other parts of South Yorkshire during the school summer holidays which open today (Friday). During the four weeks, some six hundred boys will be given the benefit of a week in camp at Bridlington, relays being taken at the rate of 150 a week. As one party is collected and taken another party will be brought back.
The officer commanding the camp is Mr. F. J. Smith, organiser of physical culture under the West Riding County Council for this part of South Yorkshire. His second in command will be Mr. F. B. Tipping (picture), a member of the staff of the Boys’, Modern School, Wombwell, and a member of the committee of the Dearne Valley branch of the National Union of Teachers.
Mr. Tipping will be at the camp for the whole month and, as looking after and catering for 150 boys a week for a month is not exactly a “holiday” for one who is acting in a position of supervision all the year round, he will be allowed a compensating holiday of a fortnight by the County trducation authority. Mr. Tipping has had considerable experience of camping under all conditions, for John Street School (his former school) were pioneers in this form of holiday for boys, organising their own camp fourteen years ago. Under reorganisation, however, they have found it impossible to run a camp economically and they have now joined up with this general scheme which, no doubt, will be extended in future years.
