Pearson Field Full Back – Ernest Bishop

A fortnight ago, the photograph of Rothery, one of the Pearson Field fullbacks was reproduced in this column; here is his partner Ernest Bishop. The pair have done some splendid work this season and if the palm had to be awarded to only one, it would not be an easy matter to distinguish between them.

Pearson Field are essentially a combination and not a team of individuals, the club spirit being largely responsible for their phenomenal success this season. If one had to choose a dozen players from the ranks of Dearne Valley Junior football who has shown special promise this season, Bishop would certainly be among them.

This is in spite of the fact that he is probably the smallest full back in Barnsley Nelson League football.

Perhaps the best description that could be applied to Bishop’s style of football is that he is a player on the Dicky downs type. He goes all out for the ball and fears nothing of taking risks. The heavier the conditions the better he enjoys it. He revels in mud. Strong and resourceful, he is seldom beaten when he has set his mind on a challenge.

He has captained the Pearson Field side this season and by his personal enthusiasm and redoubtable example, has done much to inspire the team to big achievements.

Formerly a member of the Wombwell St Marys club, Bishop joined up with Pearson feel when they embarked on their career at the beginning of the present season. He is open to be “in at the kill” when the Nelson league championship is awarded.

He’s 20 years of age, stands 5’5” and weighs about 11 stones.
