One Killed, One Injured at Wombwell

One man was killed, another injured and a third had a lucky escape in a road accident at Aldham Bridge, Wombwell, about 11 p.m. on Thursday. The men were walking home together from the direction of Barnsley when they were involved in an accident with a motor van, which finished up in a field at the other side of the road.

The man killed on the spot was Thomas Stevenson (54) of Barnsley Road, Wombwell. Irvin Dunn (41), Princess Street, Wombwell, an overman at Darfield Main Colliery, was taken to Beckett Hospital, Barnsley, where it was found that he had two fractured ribs and was suffering from bruises and shock. The third man who was unhurt was Walter Lee (34), single, a Co-operative assistant of 30, Wilson Street, Wombwell.

At present Mr Lee is off work sick, and Mr Dun has been off work for a long period following a knee operation.

Mr. Stevenson leaves a widow, three sons, one daughter and one grandchild. He was an old Broom-hiller and was at one time prominent in local football. He was a member of Wombwell Reform Club, Wombwell Conservative Club and Station Road (Wombwell) W.M.C. and was interested in bowls which he played at Mitchell was and Darfield Welfare ground. He was employed at Darfield Main colliery. An inquest was opened and adjourned at Barnsley on Monday.
